It’s pretty easy to wreck your candles by accident, but it’s also pretty simple to keep them burning clean if you use them well!
Here are my best tips to make the most of your candles:
1. TRIM YOUR WICK
Once you’ve burned your candle once, the wick should be trimmed before re-lighting it again (and on every subsequent burn). This ensures a clean burn to the very end of your candle. It’s super simple - use a wick trimmer or tissue to remove any burnt wick, leaving enough to light again.
2. USE YOUR LID
I love candle lids. They make the candles look finished when they’re not in use AND they keep any dust, dirt or bugs out.
Soy wax is pretty soft and digging around to get a bit of dust out feels gross. Keep the lid on when it’s not burning and you won’t have to worry about it.
3. NAIL THAT FIRST BURN
The first time you light that wick is a commitment! Leave it burning long enough for the wax to melt all the way to the sides. The best recommendation I give is 3-4 hours. If it doesn’t reach the edge before the flame is extinguished, your candle will end up tunneling - this is when you end up with un-melted wax in a circle around the edge of the candle. Not ideal.
4. NO BREEZE, AIR-CON ETC
Constant breeze and movement of air from a/c around your candle makes the wick flicker and dance. Keep it in a still place, away from doors which keep opening and closing, windows or draughts.
So there’s a few super simple tips to make the most of your candles and keep them burning clean all the way to the end.
Happy burning and I will see you next time!
